Spring Songs
Picture

Here comes the sun again!  Welcome to the spring song page. The following is a musical story, intended as a dramatized oratorio. The first 4 songs stand alone as a mini pagaent "Sing Hosanna", as presented by Knox Church, Dundas and Melrose Church, Hamilton. The Donkey Song was added to this last year. The entire Mary Magdalene Message attempts to draw from the traditions of the four gospels contained in the bible. If you read the ending chapters of the four gospels, you'll see that there are some apparent differences. For example, were there 1 or 2 angels visible at the tomb? Was Mary alone or with friends? Some of these apparent differences have contributed to scisms within the Christian Church and the topic is sometimes avoided.  The important details of the story are contained in all gospels. The Mary Magdalene Message attemps to reconcile some of the differences and focus on what seems to be the important details. "Peace be with you" is a message that comes through strongly in the Easter story and that is largely the context of this musical story. The entire oratorio, (minus The Donkey Song, which was written for the Palm Sunday "Sing Hosanna" presentation at Melrose Church last year) was presented by the Knox Church Youth Chorus and Choir in May, 2008.        We'll be posting other songs from this musical as they are edited and prepared. We hope you'll enjoy reading the story, which takes place amongst the community that followed Jesus in his ministry.

May Peace be with you all!

          The
     Mary
    Magdalene
      Message

           Grace will Lead us Home
Solo -
1)  There is a song of love, long ago
That’s meant to set us free.
It was in the time of this story, we know
That we saw how love is meant to be.

2)  Amazing grace, how wonderful the thought
That’s there for you and me.
We shall overcome for God’s will shall be
done
And the blind will all begin to see.

Disciple community  youth -
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest!

Solo -
3) Through many dangers, toils and snares
 Our Lord has already gone.
The grace that dwells in his strength is ours
And that power will make us belong.

4)  The LORD has promised goodness to stay
 From where we’ll never roam.
What now is lost will be found on the way
And grace will lead us home.

Disciple community adults and youth  -
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest!
Solo -
5)   Amazing grace, how wonderful the thought
That’s there for you and me.
We shall overcome for God’s will shall be done
And the blind will all begin to see.
All -
Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna!
Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna!
Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna!

 On a Donkey
Youth -
1) On a donkey, they said, he would travel.
And he told where a donkey and colt could soon be found.
With the mystery of this to unravel,
They soon found their way to a small town.

2) The two donkeys were tied as he’d promised
They asked, “please, can we have both, the Lord needs them awhile.
For a short time.” they said, truly honest
And the owners said “take them”, with a smile.

Chorus) For this ride on a donkey was a journey for peace
And they trusted the Lord would know the way.
The great kingdom he spoke of will mean warfare will cease
And we’ll find this together every day.

3) They spread robes on the donkeys for saddles
And the donkeys took turns so that each could have a rest.
Now the journey could go without stopping
For they both would have strength to give their best.

4) He was gentle and both donkeys listened
And he spoke, soft, in words they believed with simple trust.
It was hot, and their coats now had glistened
But they knew to continue on they must.

All -
Chorus) For this ride on a donkey was a journey for peace
And they trusted the Lord would know the way.
The great kingdom he spoke of will mean warfare will cease
And we’ll find this together every day.

5) As the children called, they both walked faster
For the donkeys were certain to look around and see
Smiling faces, in awe of their master
And in hope of the world that was to be.

        The Road to Peace
 Solo -
1)  It came around the break of dawn:
 The excitement in the air.
We were near the road he was traveling on
And they said he’d soon be there.
They said he’d soon be there.

2)  On a donkey’s back would come a carpenter’s son
 But now everyone heard more:
Of the proof in all the miracles done
And expectations of what was in store.
 What was now in store.

3)  What would soon be said, who would soon be led
By this holy, powerful king?
He could raise the dead, all the poor were fed
And the blind would all now see,
The blind would all now see!

Adults -
For the people knew of a glory true
That would soon pass into their sight.
On the branches strewn and the clothes they threw
He would come with power and might.
For the Lord had sent this amazing man
Who had courage to rally a call.
And the powers at hand would soon understand
What in truth is meant for all.

Youth  - Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!

4)  Now the land around had been trampled down
By the army that had conquered their land.
And all now feared what could disappear
By the powers now at hand,
     The powers now at hand.

5)  But as clear as day, we could see a way
To begin to find our dream:
Of a holy land, of a holy plan
And to pave the road to peace,
     The road ahead to peace.
Adults  -
For the people knew of a glory true
That would soon pass into their sight.
On the branches strewn and the clothes they threw
He would come with power and might.
For the Lord had sent this amazing man
Who had courage to rally a call.
And the powers at hand would soon understand
What in truth is meant for all.

Youth -  Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
All -      Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
Sing Hosanna, sing hosanna, sing hosanna!
Sing Hosanna, sing hosanna, sing hosanna!
Sing Hosanna, sing hosanna, sing hosanna!

      A Wonderful Love
Disciple community adults and youth  -
 1)  The time that he passed by their way
  The people sang and cheered.
But near the clothes and branches they’d lay
Some watched him pass in fear.

2) For this was he who’d raised the dead
And caused the blind to see.
Now look at how these souls were led.
How could this come to be?

Chorus: “Hosanna to God in the Highest”, was sung,
“Blest be the time at hand!
“Hosanna to God in the Highest”, was sung.
The Lord has appeared in this man.

3)  There was a way to silence it all
 That still is used today:
Where lives are crushed and truth made small
And grace is all thrown away.

4)  But there’s a road our Lord still walks
     To know and to revere:
Where peace endures and love’s unlocked
     And grace removes every tear.

Refrain:  Amazing grace, a wonderful love
Blest be the time at hand.
We shall overcome: it’s already begun!
The LORD will fulfill His command.

Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna!
Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna!
Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna!

A Crucible
Solo-
1) It wasn’t too far past the crowds that cheered:
There were others who were waiting near.
Their very words contrived.
In the end it was a plan made clear
With a way to end their selfish fears.
The time to act had arrived.

2) Never understanding that God is love
Not a something to find up above.
Each thought their lies were just.
A whisper passed through the desert air.
They agreed upon the ‘who’s and ‘where’s
And soon they pledged, they must.

Adults -
Chorus)
Friends of our Lord had made it clear
They would stay faithful, strong and near:
Invincible.
And all of those who held him dear
Would overcome their deepest fears:
A crucible.

Solo:
3) At a table set with bread and wine
Friends were there to see their true Lord shine
Each hoping that peace would soon win.
He told them to let God be glorified.
A seed from in the earth will multiply:
They’d see his light from within.

4) In another place where coins were displayed
With the one who now his friend betrayed.
They agreed to go and arrest.
With our Lord were dear friends who would defend
At his trial and even unto the end
But here they now fled this test.

Adults -
Chorus)
Friends of our Lord had made it clear
They would stay faithful, strong and near:
Invincible.
But nearly all who held him dear
Could not overcome their deepest fears:
A crucible.

Duet by the Soloists-
5) In the end, there close to his mother Mary
And two others with Mary Magdalene,
Were women who’d dared to remain.
Somewhere near in shadows were others, too
With their silence saying now “Crucify!”, too
Who all now fell in their shame.

Adults -
Even then, unto the end, He loved them all.

   Spirit of God

Disciple community youth and adults -

1) Spirit of God inside of me:
The wonder of eternity.
Spirit of All that conquers strife:
Ending sorrow, bringing life.

2) Spirit of God that’s in my soul:
Bringing peace to make me whole.
Bringing grace for all who live:
Free to offer, free to give.

Chorus)
This is meant to be:
Love now sets us free.
Everlasting might:
Bathed in Holy Light.

3) Spirit of God inside of me:
The wonder of eternity.
Spirit of All that conquers strife:
Ending sorrow, bringing life.

Chorus)
This is meant to be:
Love now sets us free.
Everlasting might:
Bathed in Holy Light.
Bringing Life, Spirit of God, Spirit of All.

         My Confidant and Friend
             (Mary’s Easter Song)
Solo -
1) It was early that morning and the sky was dark
She remembered and opened up her eyes
And again came the tears about the one she loved
And the pain he had realized

2) Still hopeful of something in a promise made
She got up and got ready for the day
When she opened the door nobody heard a sound
And she quietly went her way

Chorus) And walking through the dark
She heard the calling of a bird
And from a voice inside
She heard the gentle flow of words:
“Fear not, for I’m forever with you
Even past the end
For you, Mary, will always be
My confidant and friend”

3) She looked up and above the stars could still be seen
But the sky now glowed the richest blue
As the wind began blowing with a gentle touch
She believed that the words were true

4) Now others were waiting by the gate ahead
Who had promised to help by being there
And together they walked ahead in solemn steps
With the sadness and grief they shared
Chorus)
Ahead appeared a ray of light
Far brighter than they’d known

And then a voice called out, “Fear not!
For this to you is shown:
The one you seek cannot be found
With those who’ve passed away
You’ll meet him soon in Galilee.
This to his friends now say.”

Bridge) Mary sat weeping
As she pondered what they’d heard
“Why are you weeping?”
Came a voice that called to her
Saying, “Who is it you’re looking for?”
And she tried to tell him why
Then she looked and saw the light of love
All -
That shone there in his eyes.

Chorus)
“Fear not, for I’m forever with you
Even past the end
For you, Mary, will always be
My confidant and friend
And I will always be with you
Even when we seem apart
Just listen to the words of love
From deep inside your heart”

Solo -
For a moment she held him,
But he said, “It’s time to go
Now go and tell the others
Of the glory that we know
And I will meet you soon again
For you know there is a way
The God of love and life is here
All - And for all through every day.

Chorus)
For love transcends the darkest fears
And shines for all to feel
From deep inside we’ll always know
The power of love is real
Fear not, for I’m forever with you
Even past the end
For you, in truth, will always be
My confidant and friend”

               Rolled Away
Disciple community youth -
1) She was walking out our way
Soon after the break of day
And we could tell before one word:
There was something seen or heard and all.

2) Friends of hers were close behind.
Maybe treasure close to find.
They looked scared, but they looked glad:
A little bit nervous but not sad at all.

3) The men came near to gather round
And we crept close without a sound.
At first she spoke in quiet words
And then so clearly it was heard for all.

Chorus)
That huge stone was rolled away.
A light shone brighter than the day.
“Have no fear!”, an angel vowed.
“The one you seek is risen now.
He lives and breathes and soon you’ll see
Him waiting there in Galilee” for all.

4) There’s even more, we heard her say
We saw our risen friend today.
And he will tell us what to do
What happens now is up to each and all.

5) Those who heard were full of doubt.
They wondered what it was about.
But her friends said, we saw him, too
And every word she says is true for all.

Chorus)
That huge stone had rolled away.
Our Lord had risen on that day.
And we believed we’d see again
The one who was our closest friend
Alive and strong in Galilee.
And he’d be there to hear and see for all.

Chorus)
That huge stone was rolled away
And we knew he was now okay.
He lives again, we know it’s true.
He lives and breathes and soon we’d see
Him waiting there in Galilee.
Him waiting there in Galilee for all. For All.

Run away
Solo -
1) Run away:
They had all run away.
And even as they were standing there
They fumbled again, overcome with fear.
They’d run away.

2) Peter knew
The broken promise, too
It had happened and he’d heard the rooster call
To remind him of he who’d predicted it all.
He’d run away.

3) Back in time
They’d seen their Saviour shine.
But the light for all was now in the grave
And what now could be hoped to save?
They’d run away.

4) Now could it be
Again his friend to see.
And as he looked to see who would come
Already another had started to run now
Back that way.

Disciple community adults:
Chorus)
Somewhere inside us all
We yearn to have a call
But when the words are near
We hesitate to hear.
And when at last, we do
We wonder if it’s true.
Could this now be the part
That’s missing in our hearts?

Solo -
5) Soon they knew
As it came in to view
For ahead the tomb was now open wide
With the linen lying there inside it:
Cast away.

6) So, where to now
What to believe and how?
Even as they thought more of Mary’s words
Questions followed all they’d seen and heard now
There that day.

Adults:
Chorus)
Somewhere inside us all
We yearn to have a call
But when the words are near
We hesitate to hear.
And when at last, we do
We wonder if it’s true.
Could this now be the part
That’s missing in our hearts?

7)  Run away,
But there was hope today.
This woman had spoken of life anew
With the power of faith in the way and truth now
Everyday. Everyday. Everyday.

Love Has Arisen

Disciple community youth -
1) After the night
There is the dawn.
And in the light
Our sight is strong.
For we can see
And we can do
And we can be
Again made new.

Chorus)
This is the way our hope can be stronger.
This is the way our love can shine like the sun.
There is no need to wait any longer.
This is the day our journey has newly begun.

2) What we believe
And what we know
Don’t quite agree
And so it goes.
That’s how we learn.
That’s how we grow.
The time will turn
With seeds we sow.

Chorus)
Don’t be afraid to say that you’re sorry.
Don’t be afraid to speak when you know you’ve been wrong.
There can be many views to a story.
Think of the ways instead you can truly be strong.
Bridge)
Fear not for love has arisen:
Higher and stronger and true.
Peace is here now as we listen.
Feel it as power in you. In you.

3) A flower dies.
It’s colour goes,
But deep inside
Is life, we know
For in the spring
From in the ground
Multiplied will be
A treasure found.

Choruses)
This is the way our hope can be stronger.
This is the way our love can shine like the sun.
There is no need to wait any longer.
This is the day our journey has newly begun.

In you. In you. In you.

Mary, We Know You
Disciple community adults -
1) Mary, we know you.
You’ve been a tower of strength.
You’ve gone through every length
To hear your Call.
You’ve been a friend, too
Stayed to the end, it’s true
Blessed with a hope anew
For peace unto all.

2) Mary, we know you.
You were a trusted voice.
You were our Saviour’s choice
To tell of his words.
You were the one true
But we believed you not:
In a short time forgot
Your message heard.

Chorus)
For we believe you’ve seen
Something much more than we dreamed
And we  have truly
Been moved by your words.
We will hold on in trust.
Now to believe is a must.
And in our hearts let
His voice be heard.
Let His voice be heard.

3) You were the first one
To know our Lord now lives
And by his love, forgives
All we have done.
What do we do now?
What do we seek and how
Are we to finish
What now’s begun?

4) Mary, we trust you.
What is our turn about?
And not of your gender, doubt
Why you’ve been near.
You made a sacred vow
And as your faith allowed
You were the strong one
Moved beyond fear.

Chorus)
For he will come again
And as our risen friend
He will soon tell us
How to be more.
What will he say to do?
How will our faith be made new?
Will we fear not in
What is in store?
Chorus)
Yes, we believe you’ve seen
Something much more than dreamed
And we have all been
Moved by your words
We will hold on in trust
Now to believe is a must
And in our hearts let
His voice be heard.
Let his voice be heard.

5) Mary, we know you
You’ve been a tower of strength
You’ve gone through every length
To hear God’s call.
You’ve been a friend, too
Stayed to the end, it’s true
Blessed with a hope anew
For peace unto all.

   Thanks for All We’re Given

Youth -
1) Along a quiet road they walked
And of the words of Mary talked
With faith now on that afternoon
They’d see their risen Saviour soon.

2) A stranger joined, who walked along
And told them they should both be strong
He told them things they hadn’t seen.
He showed them new ways to believe.

All -
3) And when they paused to share some bread
As he gave thanks, they knew instead
That this was he, their risen friend
And he had long forgiven them.

Chorus) Now we give highest thanks for all
We’re given, whether great or small
For God, through endless wondrous ways
Shows love to each of us each day.

4) Later that night he came again
And many times, to many friends.
“Peace be with you” he said to all.
“Be strong and you will hear your Call.”

5) And so we live with strength to do
What matters and is always true
For we will always hear his voice
When peace within is our true choice.

Chorus) And we give highest thanks for all
We’re given, whether great or small
For God, through endless wondrous ways
Shows love to each of us each day.
And we give thanks for gifts of life
And ending human pain and strife.
For grace is what we all now know:
God’s love and peace for all to show, to
show.

Peace Be With You

Sung by all -
1) There’s a time you look around.
You think you had the answers found.
Your faith is big, but then seems small
And then perhaps, you hear a Call.
So how does it apply to you?
And what are you supposed to do?
Could it be something unforeseen
As in a truly awesome dream?

2) The times will come when you will say:
“It’s time to go or time to stay.”
Let virtue show the surest turn
And know that’s how we’re supposed to learn.
It’s what we call eternity
And how it lasts infinitely.
But still again what must we do
To let our hearts be raised anew?

Chorus)
“Peace with you!” were chosen words
Revealed, in resurrection heard.
Fear not, for you will have the power
Inside you each and every hour.
For you’ll be sent the strength you need
A friend to help, the world to feed.
And this is how to listen true:
With peace to all inside of you.
Inside of you.

3) There were many there to see
And many views of history.
But in the light for all to know
A command was given for all to go
And spread the good news in the words
Around the whole world to be heard.
To follow this supreme command
Towards every woman, child and man.

4) The time is here to help create:
A time for all to celebrate
The victory of endless love,
The message of a single dove.
The Way and Truth for us to know
Has risen so we all can grow.
For children we are meant to be
With faith the power to set us free..

Coda)
And this, this is the key:
This power of Love
Is in you and in me.
And now, come now what may,
This message divine
Will show us the Way.
Forever, world without end
Compassion will show
We’re meant to be friends.
This Truth for us to live
Will show how we care:
We’ll rise and forgive.
For Peace waits for this time
It’s in us to share:
It’s yours and it’s mine.
And this, this is the key:
This power of Love
Is in you and in me.

“Fear not!” Amen.
Amen. Amen.
